The Biology of Aging with Matt Kaeberlein, PhD
“If you hear somebody claim that something has been shown clinically to slow aging or extend lifespan in humans [aside from people with disease] your bullsh*t radar should come on”
- Professor Matt Kaeberlein, PhD
I interviewed, Matt Kaeberlein, PhD, a Professor of Pathology, Adjunct Professor of Genome Sciences, and Adjunct Professor of Oral Health Sciences at the University of Washington. His research interests are focused on the basic mechanisms of aging in order to facilitate translational interventions that promote healthspan and improve quality of life.
As someone who suffers from “Shiny Object Syndrome” I really appreciated this interview with Dr. Kaeberlein to really bring me down to earth about what we do and don’t know about the lifestyle and longevity.
In this interview we discuss:
The hallmarks of aging
What we know about dietary interventions for delaying aging, including caloric restriction, fasting, and ketogenic diets
Growth factors (mTOR, IGF-1, GH)
Rapamycin
Exercise
The issues with translating longevity research from animal models to humans
